Abstract

Background: The implementation or adoption of evidence-based nursing interventions (EBNI)
package into maternity nurses' practices related to obstetric emergency care, particularly postpartum
hemorrhage (PPH) could potentially result in a reduction of PPH mortality. The research aimed to
evaluate the effect of evidence-based nursing interventions package implementation on maternity nurses'
performance regarding postpartum hemorrhage. Research design: A quasi-experimental design was
utilized. Setting: The research study was carried out at Tanta University Hospital, El-Menshawy General
Hospital and El-Mabara Hospital, Tanta, Egypt. Subjects: All available nurses (85 nurses) at the
previously mentioned study settings. Two tools were utilized for data collection; Tool (I): Maternity
nurses′ knowledge assessment questionnaire regarding evidence based nursing intervention package in
relation to postpartum hemorrhage; that included two parts: part (1): Nurses′ socio-demographic data,
part (2): Nurses′ knowledge regarding EBNI package for prevention and management of PPH. Tool (II):
Nurses' practices observational checklist regarding evidence based nursing intervention package in
relation to postpartum hemorrhage, included three parts: part (1): Prevention of PPH during the third
stage of labor, part (2): Prevention of PPH during the fourth stage of labor, part (3): Management in
case of PPH Results: A statistically significant improvement of maternity nurses' performance was
demonstrated immediately and one month after EBNI package implementation as compared to pre
implementation. Conclusion and recommendations: EBNI package implementation enhanced maternity
nurses' knowledge in relation to prevention and management of PPH with satisfactory practices regarding
it. Evidence- based nursing interventions package should be applied as a recommended nursing protocol
for PPH.
