Abstract

Background: Women often experience limitations in their daily activities due to physiological foot
edema, which is a common problem during pregnancy. A straightforward method for alleviating
physiological foot edema is Buerger's exercise. Aim: To evaluate the effect of Modified Buerger–Allen
exercises on physiological feet edema and pain among primigravida women in late pregnancy. Design: A
quasi-experimental research design (two groups "control/study", ″pre & post-test″) was used to attain the
aim of this research. Setting: This research was conducted at Obstetrics & Gynecological outpatient clinic
at Benha University Hospitals in Qaliobya governorate, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of (112)
pregnant women with pitting edema (56 for study and 56 for control group). Tools: Data collection was
conducted using five instruments: a structured interviewing questionnaire, women knowledge
questionnaire, an observation and examination chart for pitting edema (including a clinical assessment
chart and a non-elastic tape measure of the feet), the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and women's satisfaction
questionnaire. Results: There was a highly statistically significant difference concerning left and right
feet circumferences, degree of feet edema and pain severity between both groups at five days and ten days
after the intervention in favor of study group. Conclusion: Modified Buerger–Allen Exercises were
highly effective in reducing physiological foot edema and pain among primigravida women in late
pregnancy. Recommendations: An educational program should be applied about Buerger Allen
Exercises for all maternity nurses working in antenatal clinics to provide them with the necessary and
required knowledge and skills.
