Abstract

Background: The prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes has increased dramatically worldwide over the
past two decades. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of people with diabetes
worldwide will increase from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022 by 2024. The prevalence of diabetes is
increasing faster in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. The organization also
estimates that diabetes cases will increase by more than 10% over the next ten years if effective measures are not
taken to prevent its rise. Aim: the study aimed to identify the role of health institutions in reducing the prevalence
of diabetes. Design: a descriptive approach was used to describe the role of health institutions in reducing the
prevalence of diabetes. Setting: This study was conducted through an electronic questionnaire survey to enable
access to a large number of diabetic patients in Tabuk city. Study Sample: A convenience sample of (450) diabetic
patients. Tools: two tools were utilized for data collection: the first tool: a questionnaire on the level of health
awareness among patients with diabetes, the second tool: a questionnaire on the role of health institutions in
reducing the spread of diabetes in Tabuk city. Results: The results revealed that the arithmetic mean for the level of
the role of health institutions in reducing the spread of diabetes in Tabuk city was (2.75), which is a high level, and
at the level of the axes, the arithmetic mean for the preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative role reached (2.75,
2.77, 261), which are high levels, and the level of health awareness among diabetics very high. Conclusions: The
findings revealed that the level of health awareness among diabetics in general is very high, and the level of
preventive role in reducing the spread of diabetes by health institutions at the level of Tabuk was high, and the role
of health institutions in reducing the spread of diabetes in the city of Tabuk was high. Recommendations:
Research centers should be established within healthcare institutions to support studies related to diabetes. Also,
Seminars and intellectual meetings should be held to raise awareness. Partnerships should also be built between
healthcare institutions and various community organizations—whether religious, social, media, or civil—to raise
awareness. Courses and workshops should be held for physicians and healthcare workers on diabetes management
mechanisms and strategies. Various media outlets should play their desired role in raising awareness about
diabetes. Diabetes should be included in school curricula, and awareness of its risks and coping mechanisms should
be promoted.
